Welcome Speech Classes- Instructor, Ms. Davis

I am excited about you visiting the library next week. Here is some information that you will need for our visit.

You will be starting a research assignment and you will be using the following: Gale, Ebsco, Discovery, Proquest, Brain Pop and Worldbook. When you use the resources at home or away from campus, you will need usernames and passwords. They can be found on the handout your parents received at open house or on the book mark attached to the desk top monitors in the library.

The Library Activity Sheet is a guide for gathering information and planning what you do when you visit the library. The activity sheet is based on Big 6 Research. I will assist you with your assignments. That is the job for which I am qualified. See the avatar on the web site to find out more about those qualifications.

Always have the activity sheet and a blue pass when you visit the library during class time. This sheet has been emailed to your teachers, placed in their mail boxes, and it is on the school's server in the common folder where they store their lesson plans.

If you visit the library during lunch or after school, meet me in the cafeteria. You may bring lunch and snacks. You can also receive more information if you follow us on Twitter @ YatesLibrary.

Have a wonderful holiday!

Former Lady Bush is THE BOMB.COM...

...not only because she first taught in Houston or is a certified librarian. Not even because she is a Longhorn. But, because she, as the First Lady of Texas is responsible for the Texas Book Festival and as the Nation's First Lady, the National Book Festival! This past weekend, I attended the TexBKFest in Austin and met quite a few authors and of course purchased a gazillion books. I even met Dan Rather! I shall post pictures later.

Literacy Month

In 2009, President Obama proclaimed October as National Literacy Month. There is a lot going on in our library this month. We celebrate Teen Read Week and Gulf Coast Reads with two field trips to Houston Public Library. For TRW we will visit the Smith Neighborhood Branch for a collaborative lesson and viewing of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. We will also visit the Central Branch of HLP for a celebration, book discussion, and meet the author Jonathan Safran Foer.

Incredibly Closer

I have just returned from New York where I participated in an independent book study of Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. This Name That Book book is also this year's Gulf Coast Reads selection. You will hear more about the author and book as we near October.

Millionaire Readers

Do not forget to submit your summer reading logs to the librarian or to your English or reading teacher. Logs are due, September 28. If you have read at least five books over the summer, simply list the book, author, your name and ELAR teacher on a sheet of paper and turn it in. The librarian will contact you about verifying what you have read.
