My name is Henry. I’d like to tell other teens who don’t use the library that they should definitely check it out. There is more to do here than they may think. They have cool programs like Lunch Loteria,Teen Book Swap, and monthly contests and they’re free. They have all kinds of stuff to read like magazines, graphic novels, manga, and more. My favorite book from the library is Killing Mr. Griffin.

Even if you don’t like to read, the library has great stuff like movies and music. I bet if you look or ask a librarian for help, you’ll find something good! And at a time when my parents and everyone else is trying to spend less money, the library is the perfect place to go. My library also has computers I can use for homework, to keep in touch with my friends and family. Also, parents should go to the library, too! They can see all of the resources the library has for the whole family.

October 17 to November 18 is Teen Read Month and my librarian, Ms. Hunter says that the theme for Teen Read Month is "Picture It! @ your library" which is great because it includes so much! I can read about movies, photography, cartooning or even a graphic novel. If I can read it, I can picture it!

So, don’t forget to read a book and check out the library!

Reading with Pride

Today, students attended a celebration of JY Reading with Pride! The following students and staff completed Dr. Grier's summer reading challenge of reading at least five books this summer. Congratulations to:

Musuluma, Jorshae, Armontre, Charles, Alaye, Dat, Ariel, Brittney, Ms. Clary, Ms.Cooke, and Mr. Johnson

The students received the following Reader VIP gifts:

-millionaire beads
-free YA books
-Jack in the Box coupons for free shakes, free meals, and a free drink with purchase
-Free tickets to a Houston Rockets game
-a book cover
-pen
-a coupon for a free Chick Fil La sandwich
-an invitation to the PTO ice cream social
The staff members received beads and a teacher supply tote bag filled with goodies.

This week is Banned Books Week

All Jack Yates Students and staff, celebrate your intellectual freedom!


Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Our school library supports the freedom to access information and express ideas. Our library program also stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or even unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them. This week, visit the library to view the banned books display and practice your intellectual freedom.

Hispanic Heritage

Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 - October 15. Stop by the library to play Loteria while practicing your Spanish. Also try out your research skills with our trivia contest.

"Build It and They Will Come..."

Yesterday, I attended a professional development session at UHCL. Four school librarians shared programming strategies for k-12 libraries. All of the presenters were knowledgeable, entertaining, and informative. One could tell that they all love their jobs. I was able to walk away with new ideas and a revival of old ones for my own school library. Of course, of special interest to me was the high school component presented by HISD's own librarian from Westbury HS, Steve Perez. In 2010-2011, I shall continue Steve's suggestion of more Barnes & Noble like displays and the no fine/"let's make a deal" practices for the Hazel Hainsworth Young/ Yates HS library.

Yesterday's visit was also a nice opportunity to see former instructors and classmates. I am proud to be a graduate of UHCL's School Library and Information Science.
